Man United hijack Lyon’s move for Dutch defender Malacia

Manchester United have stepped in at the final hour to hijack a €17-million deal for Feyenoord left back Tyrell Malacia, pipping Lyon in the race for the defender.

Manchester United have stepped in at the final hour to hijack a €17- million deal for  Feyenoord left back Tyrell Malacia, pipping Lyon in the race for the defender.

There had not been much talk about a potential deal for the defender but after Lyon had negotiated a deal worth €13m up front, with €2m in add-ons, United have come in at the last minute with a higher offer.

United’s offer is believed to be worth €15m up front with a further €2m in add-ons.

Personal terms, however, still need to be agreed for United to complete the potential transfer but Feynoord expect the deal to go through according to the club’s director.

“The agreement with Man United is there. We are now waiting for Tyrell,” Feyenoord director Frank Arnesen told 1908NL.

“If Malacia says yes, then a transfer to Manchester United is imminent.”

The defender shone for his club side last season, making 50 appearances in all competitions and earning him a call-up to the Netherlands squad last September. He has won five caps for his national side since.

The 22-year-old came out of the Feyenoord academy and is an attacking full back who would suit new manager Erik ten Hag’s style of play.

Malacia is a graduate of the Feyenoord academy and has played 136 games for his boyhood club since making his first-team bow in 2017.

United are also in talks with fellow Netherlands international Frenkie De Jong and hope to complete a deal soon.
